🌡️ Thermal Conductivity Testing of Foam Material – ISO 22007-2 (TPS Method)
Recently, we had the opportunity to perform Thermal Conductivity Testing on a foam sample using the Transient Plane Source (TPS) Method in accordance with ISO 22007-2.
Unlike traditional steady-state methods, TPS is a transient technique that measures how heat spreads through a material over time. During the test, a sensor acts as both a heat source and temperature monitor. The sensor is placed between two pieces of the sample, and a controlled heat pulse is applied.
As the heat dissipates into the foam, the temperature response is continuously recorded. From this data, the thermal conductivity of the material can be calculated.
For foam materials, thermal conductivity is a critical property as it directly affects insulation performance and energy efficiency. Generally, the lower the thermal conductivity value, the better the material's ability to resist heat transfer.
Thermal conductivity testing helps manufacturers validate product performance, support R&D activities, and ensure compliance with technical specifications.
