But not just any hardness test…

 

👉 For a car tyre, the most commonly used method is Shore A Hardness Test (ASTM D2240 / ISO 7619-1).

 

Why Shore A?

 

Car tyres are made from rubber and elastomeric materials, which are too soft for metal hardness tests like Rockwell, Brinell, or Vickers.

 

That’s where Shore A Hardness comes in. It measures the rubber’s resistance to indentation, giving an indication of how hard or soft the material is.

 

🔬 How is the test performed?

 

A Shore A durometer is placed perpendicular to the rubber surface.

 

A spring-loaded indenter is pressed into the tyre under a specified force, and the instrument displays a hardness value between 0 and 100 Shore A.

 

* Lower Shore A → Softer rubber, better flexibility and grip.

* Higher Shore A → Harder rubber, improved wear resistance and longer service life.

 

The challenge is finding the right balance, because tyre performance depends on the intended application.

 

Hardness testing is a quick and simple method, but it provides valuable information for product quality, consistency, and performance.
