Which Test Standard you use?
📏 ASTM, ISO, BS, JIS… Which Testing Standard Should We Use?
One question I get quite often is:
“Which testing standard is the best?”
The answer is…
👉 There isn’t one standard that’s “better” than another. It all depends on your product, industry, and customer requirements.
For example:
🔹 ASTM – Widely used in the United States and many international industries.
🔹 ISO – Internationally recognized and commonly adopted worldwide.
🔹 BS – British Standards, often specified in UK-based projects.
🔹 JIS – Japanese Industrial Standards, frequently required for Japanese manufacturers and suppliers.
Although two standards may evaluate the same property, the test procedure, specimen dimensions, test speed, equipment setup, and acceptance criteria can be different.
That’s why, before recommending any test, we always ask:
✅ What is the material?
✅ What is the application?
✅ Is there a required testing standard?
✅ Is it customer or regulatory requirement?
Choosing the correct testing standard is just as important as performing the test itself.
