Surface Roughness Testing — What Are We Actually Measuring?
During our recent testing session with the customer, we used a Portable Surface Roughness Tester to evaluate the surface condition of the sample.
But what does the instrument actually measure?
The tester uses a stylus that moves across the surface profile and detects variations in the surface texture.
Some commonly evaluated parameters include:
Ra — Average roughness
Rz — Average maximum height of the roughness profile
For testing, the measurement parameters and evaluation conditions are selected according to the applicable standard and requirement, such as ISO 21920.
Why is this important?
Surface roughness can influence friction, wear, coating adhesion, sealing performance and overall product quality.
The right measurement method matters to ensure the result represents the actual surface condition.
