Measurement Uncertainty in Calibration

Measurement Uncertainty in Calibration — Why Does It Matter for UTM?

A UTM (Universal Testing Machine) gives us a measurement — but how confident are we in that measurement?

That’s where Measurement Uncertainty comes in. 📏

Recently, we conducted a Measurement Uncertainty in Calibration Training for Universal Testing Machine (UTM), focusing on understanding how uncertainty is evaluated and how it affects measurement results.

🔍 Why is it important for UTM?

UTM measurements such as Maximum Load, Tensile Strength, Yield Point and Elongation are affected by various factors.

Understanding measurement uncertainty helps us to:

✅ Evaluate the reliability of measurement results

✅ Identify major contributors to uncertainty

✅ Understand repeatability and measurement variation

✅ Determine the combined and expanded uncertainty

✅ Improve confidence when reporting results

✅ Support compliance with ISO/IEC 17025 requirements

📚 What did we learn?

During the training, we explored how to identify and evaluate different uncertainty components, including factors related to the measurement system, calibration, repeatability and testing conditions.

The goal is not simply to obtain a result — but to understand how reliable that result is.

Because in measurement, a number is only as meaningful as our confidence in it.
