🔬 Vickers Hardness Testing — What Actually Happens?
A Vickers Hardness Test determines the hardness of a material by creating a controlled indentation using a diamond pyramid indenter.
But how is the hardness value actually obtained?
⚙️ 1. Diamond Indenter
A square-based diamond pyramid is pressed into the material surface under a specified test force.
⚙️ 2. Test Force
The applied force must be controlled according to the selected test method and hardness range.
⏱️ 3. Dwell Time
The force is maintained for a specified period before being removed to ensure consistent indentation formation.
🔍 4. Measure the Indentation
After removing the force, the two diagonals of the indentation are measured optically.
📐 5. Calculate Vickers Hardness
The hardness value is determined from the applied force and the average indentation diagonal:
HV = 1.8544 × F / d²
Where:
F = test force
d = mean length of the two indentation diagonals
Why does it matter?
A proper Vickers hardness test helps evaluate material hardness, consistency and mechanical performance, which can be important for quality control, material verification and manufacturing processes.
The result can be affected by factors such as surface preparation, test force, dwell time, indentation measurement and material condition.
So, it’s not simply about “making an indentation” — every parameter matters.
